Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has revealed how
fans still call him ‘Mike’ in reference to a Louis van Gaal blunder in the
summer.
The embarrassing error occurred in July when the manager was
praising his captain Wayne Rooney before seemingly forgetting Smalling’s first
name while explaining the hierarchy of skippers in his squad.
‘The first captain is Wayne Rooney, the second captain is
Michael Carrick and last year the third captain was Mr Mike Smalling, sorry,
Chris!’ he said.
And ever since Van Gaal’s slip of the tongue the England
international has revealed his new nickname is proving difficult to shake off:
‘The players don’t [call me it] but I think a lot of the
fans do,’ he said.
‘You go to Russia or wherever and it’s Mike, Mike, Mike.
It’s going to stick with me forever, that one!’
