Mirror Sport can reveal the French striker, who could eventually cost his new club an eye-watering £58million, was on the verge of joining Everton just 18 months ago.
Boss Roberto Martinez is a big admirer of the France international, and made a strong approach to take the then 18-year-old on loan in the winter of 2013-14.
Martial had become disillusioned with what he saw as a lack of game-time at Monaco, and was seriously pushing for the switch to the English club to try and gain experience.
Talks got close to completion, but in the end, the French club pulled out of the deal, and instead offered the Blues the chance to take Ivory Coast international Lacina Traore on loan instead.
